Appealing Academic Suspension or Dismissal

Policy for Academic Suspension and Dismissal

All students are expected to stay in good academic standing by earning and maintaining a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 each semester and by successfully completing (earning) at least 67% of their attempted hours each semester. Students who fail to stay in good academic standing are placed on academic warning and are expected either to regain academic good standing within one semester or else meet the following criteria for continued enrollment until they regain good academic standing:

  • Earn a semester GPA of at least 2.25;
  • Successfully complete at least 70% of their attempted hours each semester; and
  • Participate in the Academic Success Program

Students who are on academic warning and who fail to meet any of the three criteria necessary for continued enrollment (see above) will be suspended. (Students who earn all F grades or a combination of all F, U, or W grades in a semester will be suspended without a period of academic warning.) Students who are suspended are not eligible to enroll at the university during the next regular semester, but may return after they have served one semester of suspension.

Students who have served a semester of suspension and who, while still on academic warning, fail to meet the 2.25 semester GPA and 70% successful completion standard will be dismissed from the university. Students who are dismissed have no right to future enrollment at UNC Asheville and must wait at least three years before applying to return.

Visit the University Catalog for more information about policies related to good academic standing, academic warning, academic suspension, and academic dismissal.

Procedure for Appealing Academic Suspension and Dismissal Decisions

Students who wish to appeal academic suspension or dismissal decisions may do so by completing the Suspension and Dismissal Appeal Form. The Enrollment Services Committee reviews appeals once in January (fall suspensions) and once in May (spring suspensions); the University Registrar communicates those decisions by email within two days of the committee meeting.
